WhatsApp Chatbot Cost in the UK: A Realistic Breakdown
Three layers of cost, not one
WhatsApp chatbot pricing is not a single number. Every provider's quote sits on top of three distinct cost layers, and most headline prices only show you the first one. Understanding all three matters more than comparing subscription fees.
Layer 1: Platform subscription. The monthly fee you pay the chatbot provider for the software, inbox, and AI features. This is the number on the pricing page.
Layer 2: Meta message fees. WhatsApp is not free for businesses using the API. Since July 2025 Meta charges per message sent by the business, at rates that vary by message category. These fees apply regardless of which platform you use. Some providers include them in their subscription; most pass them through separately, sometimes with a markup.
Layer 3: AI processing and extras. Some platforms charge separately for AI features, voice note transcription, knowledge base access, or per-credit AI usage on top of the base subscription.
A chatbot that looks cheaper on Layer 1 can be more expensive in total if it marks up Layer 2 or meters Layer 3.
Meta's UK message rates (as of October 2026)
Meta sets the base cost that every WhatsApp Business API user pays:
| Message category | Meta rate (USD) | Meta rate (GBP) |
|---|---|---|
| Marketing (promotions, offers) | $0.0635/msg | £0.0458/msg |
| Utility (order updates, confirmations) | $0.022/msg | £0.0159/msg |
| Service (replies to customer messages) | $0.022/msg after 1,000 free a month | £0.0159/msg after 1,000 free a month |
(Meta's USD and GBP rate cards for UK (+44) numbers, effective 1 October 2026, and Meta's pricing page, read 5 October 2026. The 1,000 free service messages are per business phone number per month.)
The October 2026 change matters. Since 1 October 2026, Meta charges for service messages: £0.0159 ($0.022) per reply to a UK number once a business phone number has sent 1,000 in the month. Utility templates sent inside the service window are charged too (Meta pricing page, read 5 October 2026). Cost estimates made before October understate what you pay now.
If your account is billed in dollars, sterling conversion carries additional friction: Meta applies a 1-2% internal margin on currency conversion, and UK bank fees add 1.5-3% on international card payments (whatsapp-api-pricing-uk report analysis). Budget 2.5-5% above the headline dollar rate for your actual GBP cost, or use Meta's GBP rates if your account bills in pounds.
Worked examples: what you actually pay
These scenarios apply Meta's UK rates to two volumes, assuming one business phone number. Platform subscription costs are on top.
Low volume: a single-location class business
50 outbound marketing messages and 1,400 service messages per month (roughly 45 customer conversations per day, with a few outbound promotions).
| Route | July to September 2026 | From 1 October 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Meta direct, billed in GBP | £2.29/mo | £8.65/mo |
| Meta direct, billed in USD | $3.18/mo | $11.98/mo |
| Via Wati (~20% markup, Chatarmin's estimate) | $3.81/mo | $14.37/mo |
| Via Twilio (+$0.005 per message sent) | $10.43/mo | $19.23/mo |
(Meta's UK rate cards, effective 1 October 2026; 400 of the 1,400 service messages are charged after the 1,000 free. Chatarmin, 2026. Twilio pricing page: $0.005 per message, inbound or outbound, so messages customers send add the same again. Read 5 October 2026.)
Before October, service messages were free and the total was trivial. Since October, Meta fees at this volume come to about £9 to £14 a month depending on routing, before the platform subscription.
Medium volume: a multi-brand or busy service business
500 outbound marketing messages and 14,500 service messages per month.
| Route | From 1 October 2026 |
|---|---|
| Meta direct, billed in GBP | £237.55/mo |
| Meta direct, billed in USD | $328.75/mo |
| Via Wati (~20% markup, Chatarmin's estimate) | $394.50/mo |
(Meta's UK rate cards, effective 1 October 2026; 13,500 service messages charged after the 1,000 free. Chatarmin, 2026. Wati does not publish its per-message rates.)
At this volume, the gap between direct Meta rates and a provider that applies a 20% markup is roughly £50/month. Over a year, that markup alone costs more than many platform subscriptions.
Platform subscription costs across the market
For context, here is what the platform layer (Layer 1) looks like across different providers as of October 2026:
- respond.io Growth: $159/mo billed yearly ($199 monthly) with 1,000 monthly active contacts, then $12 per 100 more (respond.io pricing, 5 Oct 2026).
- SleekFlow Pro, AI agents included: US$109/mo billed yearly (US$139 monthly) + US$15/month per hosted WhatsApp number, as shown to UK visitors (SleekFlow pricing, 3 Oct 2026).
- Wati Pro + Astra Pro: £99/mo billed yearly (£129 monthly), as shown to UK visitors, plus Astra Pro, priced in US dollars, at $79.20/mo billed yearly ($99 monthly), before message fees. Astra connects only on Wati's Pro or Business plans (Wati and Astra pricing pages, Wati help centre, 5 Oct 2026).
- UK AI receptionists (Hey Jodie, Ringmere, BookedSolid): £49-249/month, often with message fees included (various competitor sites, 2026).
The range is wide. A small business can pay anywhere from £49 to over £300 per month on the platform alone, before Meta message fees.
The AI processing layer
Layer 3 is where costs become hardest to predict. Some providers include AI in the subscription; others meter it:
- Wati Astra: a separate subscription. Astra Pro includes 5,000 credits a month; a text reply costs 1 credit, a rich reply (images, PDFs, tables) 3, and a voice agent call 5 credits per minute. Extra credits are $20 per 1,000 (Astra pricing page, 5 Oct 2026).
- ManyChat: Manychat AI is included from the Pro plan at $29/mo on annual billing, and the bill grows with monthly active contacts: $0.038 for each one over 2,500 on annual Pro (ManyChat pricing page, 5 Oct 2026).
- SleekFlow: AI agents are included in Pro; Premium adds AI agents that act in your other systems through webhooks and APIs (SleekFlow pricing page, 5 Oct 2026).
In a busy month, credit-metered AI can add meaningfully to the monthly bill. Ask whether AI features are included or billed separately before comparing headline prices.
What to budget realistically
For a typical UK small business (single location, moderate WhatsApp volume, wanting AI-assisted replies):
Before October 2026: Platform subscription of £49-180/month. Meta message fees near zero (service messages were free). AI processing included or £30-80/month extra if metered.
Since October 2026: The same platform subscription, plus Meta message fees that stay near zero below 1,000 replies a month per number and rise with volume: about £9 a month in the low-volume example above, and about £56 for 4,500 replies alone. If your provider marks up Meta rates, add 15-20% to the message fee estimate.
Total realistic range: £60-275/month for a low-volume single-location business since October. The spread depends almost entirely on which provider you choose and whether AI is included or stacked on top. See AI receptionist cost for a broader look at what drives the bill.
What to ask any provider
Before signing:
- Are Meta message fees included in your price, or passed through separately?
- If passed through, do you apply a markup? What percentage?
- Is AI included in the subscription, or a separate add-on? If separate, how is it metered?
- What happens when I exceed any included tier? Per-contact overage, per-message overage, or automatic upgrade?
- Are there setup fees, onboarding fees, or minimum contract terms?
- How do Meta's charges for service messages, since October 2026, show up on my bill?
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a WhatsApp chatbot cost per month in the UK?
Realistically, £60-275/month for a small business since October 2026, combining a platform subscription (£49-180), Meta message fees (around £9 to £15 at low volume, more as replies grow), and any AI processing charges. The spread depends on provider choice, volume, and whether AI is included or metered separately.
Are WhatsApp messages free for businesses?
Not on the API. Meta charges per message for marketing, utility and authentication templates, and since 1 October 2026 for service messages (replies to customer-initiated conversations) too: £0.0159 ($0.022) each to a UK number after the first 1,000 per business phone number each month. Messages customers send you are free, and so are your replies in the free entry point window after a click-to-WhatsApp ad (Meta pricing page, read 5 October 2026).
Why do some WhatsApp chatbots cost more than others?
The main differences are: whether Meta message fees are included or marked up (some providers add approximately 20%), whether AI features are part of the subscription or a metered add-on, and how the provider handles seat limits, contact caps, and overage charges. A lower subscription with high markups and metered AI can cost more than a higher subscription with inclusive pricing.
Did WhatsApp chatbot costs go up in October 2026?
Yes, for a business sending more than 1,000 replies a month from one number. Since 1 October 2026, Meta charges for service messages beyond that free allowance. A business sending 1,400 replies a month pays for 400 of them: about £6.36 ($8.80) a month in extra Meta fees at direct rates, or more through providers that mark up Meta's pricing (Meta rate cards, read 5 October 2026).
